I'm not hanging on, I've been ready to go for years but He keeps me around.

People cling to life because they failed to reconcile their mortality.
They live in fear, thats a life not worth living.
Those who fear death ain't living....they're running.

Why not? Better to be alive than not exist. We haven’t existed for the age of the universe, and will only exist for 100 years max. So like .00001 the age of the universe. It will all be over soon.

Longer as opposed to WHAT?

Even if my genetic makeup/health suggests that I'm probably going to have a long life some speeding drunk could cut my life short at any moment.

We all die. If you want to hit the exit ramp sooner so be it.

It was one of the truisms being in the military- we had a lifespan expectancy. Shorter than most.

All life ends. Whether you believe in what happens next is entirely up to you.

Because the smell of fresh springtime, walking through the woods in a quiet, still snowfall, love, etc. might not exist and/or conditions be the same if they/you do once your gone.

Because I'm always curious about 'what happens next?' Even if what happens next isn't always puppies and rainbows. Overall life is enjoyable and preferable to the alternative, which imo is simply the lack of existence.

I have no plans to take great measures to avoid death or to extend my life regardless of circumstances, but at the same time I don't plan to take unnecessary risks and embrace death either.

Is this even a serious question? It's like asking a dog or a bacteria why they strive to stay alive.

Clearly, you're depressed (as your status indicates, set 13 hours ago) making your question more in-line with psychology/mental health than a philosophical one. Perhaps it would be a good idea to reach out to a friend or family member if this is truly how you feel.

I don't know.

For some people, it's not the length of the journey, it's the enjoyment of the journey. For others, it's the length of the journey. Still others just fear death.

I would hope to go before I become infirm or dependent. Loss of dignity is a reason to go, for me. But as far as staying, I think about the little enjoyments: fried chicken, ice cream, my pets, good movies, great music. Maybe I'll have these things in the afterlife? Is there an afterlife? Will I be reincarnated & get a second chance to have a better life? Or would I come back as a roach? I don't have any answers.
