If animals are more noble then humans, it’s only because we have designated them as such. Animals act upon instinct, not out of a desire to fulfil a human made moral compass. Atrocities don’t exist in the natural world. If they did, then we could proclaim Mother Nature the least ethical of all beings.
Why did nature kill off over 99% of all living things?
Nature will also exterminate all life forms when the Sun enters its red giant phase. Nature will also extinguish the flames of all life with the heat death of the universe. It will not do so out of malice, but because it is the natural order of things.

There is a great film titled All The Little Animals starring Christian Bale and John Hurt. I think some of the posters on this thread will find it illuminating.

As a near-fanatical animal lover (and a fanatical cat lover), I am realistic enough to realize that animals simply don't have the capacity or opportunity to be as "ignoble" (vile) as humans can be. While humans are certainly mammals, there are fundamental differences between humans on the one hand and all other creatures on the other. Those differences are what allow humans to reach heights of love, decency, altruism and kindness that no other species will ever reach, but also to descend to depths of depravity to which no other species will ever descend. Trying to compare the "nobility" of animals to that of humans is a category mistake.

Animals might not be higher up on the food chain but they are more pure even if it's pure ugliness. They live to survive, eat and reproduce. Some might have a hierarchy or want territory but even that's pure and/or accepted. And that's why some might fight to the death.

Good points.

We live to survive, eat, and reproduce. We just tend not to realize that.

Humans are animals, so ...

Also “noble” is a human concept which does not apply in the (non-human) animal world.
