I just moved to Gilbert from MI and live in an apartment on the waterways in Gilbert. I love the wildlife and just see water everyday in the hot weather. Are there lakes or these waterways anywhere else in the Phoenix area?? or west valley??

those are man made lakes within the subdivisions. Scottsdale
has a subdivision like that as well and folks have their little
pontoon boats and private docks in their back yard. Its quite
lovely. Don't really know of anywhere else in the metro area
that has them. Most of the parks have a man made lake of
some sort (urban lakes they call them).

They are everywhere. Tempe has Dobson Ranch, Glendale has Arrowhead, Avondale Crystal Gardens, Goodyear has Estrella, Phoenix has Ahwatukee with lake developments. That is just a few.

Even down here in Casa Grande we have the "Lakes" subdivision - though nowhere near as big as the ones up in the valley.

Well, no, Mesa has Dobson Ranch. Tempe has The Lakes.

Because they are filled with reclaimed water, not suitable for swimming:

Reclaimed Water

Some are, some aren't. Some of the older ones use canal water, or wells. The practice is now banned and reclaimed is the rule. The lakes in Estrella are well water, for example. They used to allow swimming when I first moved here and even held triathlons here where the participants swam across the lake. Several years ago, the no swimming signs went up. I don't recall any reason being given. The kids still take the boats out and tip them over and swim that way.

In most of these lakes, reclaimed or not, the water is not that inviting and few would want to swim in them anyway. A pool is a much better choice.
