Hi,

I'm planning on driving to Phoenix from Las Vegas on Thursday and come back on Saturday. Does anyone know what time is best to leave Vegas to come to Phoenix and what time is best to leave Phoenix on Saturday.

I know we can take US-93 all the way to Phoenix. Has anyone tried I-17 and I-40 route yet? I'm curious if it's worth the extra 100 miles since you can stop by Sedona.

Thanks!

I find that taking 95 south and then heading east on 93 through Laughlin is the best route because you avoid the Boulder Dam traffic, searches and tourists. Taking I40 to I17 would add a lot of time and wouldn't recommend it, especially if you're just going to drive through Sedona and Flagstaff. If however you have an extra day I highly recommend spending the night in Flagstaff and taking Schnebley Hill Road from Flagstaff to Sedona - I did it last weekend (2nd time) and it's a beautiful drive (requires moderately high clearance vehicle).

If you go at night you can avoid most of the traffic, other than that I do not think there is a better time. If you wish to avoid the dam traffic you can go through Laughlin, but I never do, it is a wash time wise (less aggravation, but more boring). Just put on some good music and go with the flow.

The I-40 to I-17 is a waste unless you really want to go to Sedona. Too far out of the way to see some red rocks IMHO.

Thanks so much nickw252 and AZJoeD. I'll definitely stop by Flagstaff another time since i'm on a time constraint now. Yes i was a little worried about crossing the Hover Dam.

AZJoe is right - if you go at night with low traffic don't waste your time going through Laughlin - it's about 25 miles extra.

Also - the drive on 93 is really neat, especially when you go through the the Joshua Tree Parkway. I'd rather see that than Sedona.

deer/animals are always a concern going through mountain passes (mostly at dusk though). Keep your car full of gas - other than that, drink plenty of coffee.

Also - depending on where you are going in Phoenix - I would recommend taking SR74 east to I17 south instead of following 93/60 into the city. If you stay on 93/60 you'll be in suburban hell - stoplight after stoplight with tons of traffic.

I made a similar mistake in Las Vegas - taking the Boulder HWY instead of 515 - wow was that a waste of time.

I'll be staying at a hotel in Phoenix and drive to Tempe to visit the school. How is 202?
