We are relocating from southern NJ (in the sticks, 1 hour from Philadelphia) and are looking at the Buckeye area. We are artists who do large scale mosaic work, and there are lots of opportunities in the southwest for what we do. I have relatives in San Diego and Tempe, so this would be a good location for us. Since we will have cash from the sale of our home, we are looking for a small place, possibly a foreclosure. We're 2 adults in our fifties, used to living in a high crime, economically challenged area, now just looking for room for our studio, and our 3 dogs. Not interested in the yuppie lifestyle, just want a laid back neighborhood with neighborly people. Any suggestions? We're also not interested in one of those manufactured "artsy" communities.

I assume you are looking at the Sundance area of Buckeye. It is not high crime there, but the economic challenge will be obvious in the large number of foreclosures. Higher crime and more challenged are the historic areas of Buckeye, but it has its charm with older houses, more green.

You might also want to consider Goodyear - Canyon Trails development just south of I10. Prices may be a tad higher than Buckeye but you will get what you pay for in a number of ways. Also, Estrella is in Goodyear and, though less convenient, is so attractive a setting that it may even inspire the artist in you.

Not a fan of Buckeye...Houses there are dirt cheap for a reason.

Thanks for the feedback! What do you think of Chandler? I see they have a nice art center, and a Third Friday art walk, which we have here where I now live.
