Howdy there, Citydata Forum! My name is James and Im new here. I'm hoping to move out of Northern California to Arizona sometime soon. Id like to live in Maricopa county as I have a friend there, But not in mainland Phoenix. I was considering such suburbs as Surprise, Fountain Hills, Paradise valley, And Etc. Could anyone help me make a choice? Mainly looking for: Friendliness of people, Low crime and a fairly quiet area/neighborhood. Thanks a ton - James

James, you'll need to post a lot more information, and you'll get a lot of responses.

Because the Phoenix metro area is a very wide spread area, people will need to know where your job will be located.

Also, what size house do you need, and what is your budget. Then everyone can begin to give you some information and choices.

Additional information: Job will more likely then not, Be in downtown phoenix. I am able to pay 1500$ A month for rent on preferably a home with a 2 car garage in surprise. 3 Bedrooms is preferable but 2 will suffice.
My professions include: Repairs, Contracting, Auto mechanic, Tow truck operator, Can work with mentally disabled people, Firearms are another profession of mine. I will be relocating to the suburbs of phoenix with a 3 year old girl. I have decided to move because CA is getting too expensive for me to live in and the crime around my neighborhood is rising rapidly. I enjoy the heat and beautiful desert sunrises. A quiet, laid back area would be nice.

Jobs in those fields are not particularly likely to be based in downtown Phoenix. Where you end up working will go a long way to determining where you live. You don't want to find a job in the eastern part of the Valley after you've rented a home in Surprise and have that commute (Surprise is a nice bedroom community, but the traffic in and out of there, if you are going very far, makes a very slow commute).

With your various skills you might find a job in any part of town, but mostly likely not downtown. You should have no problem finding a decent place to live just about anywhere in the metro area for the amount you are prepared to spend.

I can only comment on Surprise cause we just bought a house there, and it is a very ideal and safe feeling city. You should have no problem renting a 3 bd, 2 bth, 2 car garage house in Surprise for $1500 a month. You could even BUY a house that large with your monthly payments being under $900 a mth (including tax and insurance and potentially HoA). I don't know much about the other areas you're considering. Scottsdale seems nice too and just basically on the east side of NW Phx while Surprise is the west side.
