Guns sales jumped nationwide (at least in areas where such sales are allowed) not just AZ. They always do after these tradegies. The press surmises it was because of a gun ban fear, but I think it has something to do with the insecurity people feel after such events and the notion that gun ownership/carrying would protect them. As for AZ being armed, well no one apparently had a gun in that Safeway lot other than the murderer. Gun advocates would argue if someone had, the outcome might have been different.
Actually, Ponderosa, you are wrong. There was another person with a gun who was taking aim at someone until others hollered at him to put the gun down. He was pointing it at the wrong person. Good thing some of the victims were sharp-eyed enough to stop him, don't you think?

My impression of AZ is a good one, for the most part. We're headed down to Tucson from Oregon to visit our daughter this weekend and looking forward to the trip.

So, as much as I like AZ (as an outsider) and as unfair as it is to give any one place a label, I do wonder about the love affair the peeps of AZ appear to be having with guns.
I can tell you what you call thier love affair really is,,

It's the second amendment why Az is standing up for the right to bare arms ..(which is guns) I live in Oregon and I wish our state had the guts to stand up for this right that the left leaning Politians is trying to take away from us..

The New Times(which has a version for various cities, not just Phx) is a lefty, socialist rag. The only reason I pick it up is to see band listings for the week at various clubs. The articles enrage me, as well as the feedback every week from readers about stories passed. Never in my life have I ever read such hippy, commie, bleeding heart bullsh*t.........I can't remember the last time I browsed thru one and didn't have a huge vein pulsing out of my neck and forehead and being in a bad mood for the next 12 hours.

My impression is these newspapers tend to be aimed at the 20-30 age demographic and like to be as liberal as possible, partially because of the biases of the writers, partially because of the desire to appear 'hip'. People tend to get more conservative as they get older, people in the arts tend to be more liberal, and the additive effect is that entertainment-focused papers swing way left.

To give the example of liberal NYC, the Village Voice, which a lot of people bought for the band listings, was way to the left of, say, the Daily News and New York Post (which actually endorsed Bush the second time around), and even the NYT.

Phoenix (Arizona) has a gained a bad reputation. Just being honest...

I have friends from around the country and each one of them asks, why do you live there?

I like it here but I do see that we have serious issues facing us.

But metropolitan Phoenix is the home of the spiteful, the land of Tent City and Sheriff Joe Arpaio, of Senate Bill 1070 and Russell Pearce — and a governor who champions it all.

Just last October, a think tank at Arizona State University called the Center for the Future of Arizona released poll data showing that civic engagement is far higher in Tucson than Phoenix. In Tucson, more people vote, more families eat dinner together, more neighbors exchange favors.

There's still lots to love about Phoenix, my hometown, but really, if any place deserves to be the poster city — accidental or otherwise — for hate, it's Phoenix. From up here, I can't help but think one thing:

Tucson took our bullet."

I have highlighted the key points of this excerpt in bold.

Why does Phoenix have this negative reputation? What can Phoenix do to be a city that is not "spiteful," where people engage in higher levels of civic engagement, and be a city that is not viewed as the "poster city for hate?"
This isn't complicated. The New Times is a lefty rag. And the Left has an agenda to smear Phoenix in anyway possible. This has been the case for several years.
Tucson is mostly blue (Dem) whereas Phoenix is mostly red (GOP).
Note that the writer does not discuss the fact (and why) Tucson is so impoverished compared to Phoenix.

It's because that writer is an idiot, that's why. I lived in AZ for 5 years, I live in CA now, but still maintain a home in AZ and work there. AZ may not have been for me, but it does, in no way, devalue the friendships that I made there. Heck, all of my AZ friends were at my wedding in CA. I may not call AZ home, and I have no problem pointing out it's faults ( what city doesn't have it's faults? ), but PHX is the best kept secret, with that said, if I had not fallen in love with my wife ( from CA ) and the CA town I live in now, you woulda needed a team of horses to get me out of AZ.

and before any of you haters pop on here about PHX or small town Cali, I grew up in The Bronx, NYC, for 33 years, so save your elitist crap for someone else.
