Surprise is a long drive to the VA hospital, as would Peoria be. There are other communities that are closer in. Avondale, north of I-10, would be fine and would be an easier drive to the VA. I would think you can find a place for workout with a pool in closer in areas as well. Scorpions and other toxic bugs are not the widespread issue they are often suggested to be. Odds are you will never see a live scorpion.

There is a YMCA with pools in Goodyear which is right next door to Avondale. They also have a Y near downtown with indoor pool. You might consider that area as well as it would be convenient to the VA. Don't let the scorpion issue scare you. There are one or more people who frequent this forum who get their kicks by posting gross exaggerations, misinformation and outright lies about life in the Phoenix area.

The main VA hospital is near downtown Phoenix at 650 E Indian School.

However, there is a VA clinic in Surprise at 13985 W. Grand Ave., Suite 101
Surprise, Arizona 85374. The clinic can handle most primary care issues.

Check out this website for more info: Northwest Veterans Affairs Health Care Clinic - Surprise, Arizona - Phoenix VA Health Care System

Renting first would be a good idea, to give you time to get familiar with this large area without making a long term commitment to one place by purchasing.

The northern part of Avondale (north of I-10) is not a high crime area.

The Surprise VA clinic may not be enough in terms of all the services needed, but it's good to know it is there... the OP could contact them and see if they have what her husband would need, for the most part.

Peoria north of Happy Valley Rd is generally new, clean and lower in crime. Home prices are also affordable. If you have money, I would consider Northern Scottsdale or Fountain Hills.

Your property taxes will be far lower in the Sun City/ Surprise area than north Peoria. Home prices are lower as well. There are some nice pockets in Surprise, like Citrus Point which is off of 114th and Bell that may suit you since you have children still at home. There are foreclosed homes in there starting at $54,000 give or take. What is your budget for a home. That may help us help steer you better.
