please please PLEASE help!!! (Phoenix, Tempe: apartment complex, neighborhood, university)

I am in a huge bind. I found a place but I can't visit Phoenix until I move there.

I am starting my PhD at ASU in the fall and I found an apartment complex that seems to be decent, Las Vistas at Papago Park. Does anyone know much about it??? How is the neighborhood??

Any suggestions for apts around would be more then welcome!!

try using google maps to search for apartments then use their street view to get an idea of the area, its the best advice I can give, I don't live in the area near ASU so I don't know much, also there are apt review websites that can be helpful to give you a feel for what other people who have lived there feel about the area.

Be careful with apartment review websites, as generally only the hard core whiners and complainers take the time to post there.

It's not the best area, in large part because there really isn't much around there. It's certainly not expensive. I don't know what your budget is, but you might do better going a little further east, closer to campus.

I’ve not been there however I noticed on the map that it’s about a mile north of the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport at the east end of the main runway. I’ve been around this area of the airport and it gets a little noisy when the jets come in to land. I can only say that if you’re a light sleeper or need it quiet when you study at home, you could find this location a little bit of a problem then.

Hello - Congratulations on your new adventure! I do not live in Tempe, however I know people who live there and they talk about Tempe frequently. One thing I would strongly suggest is to get an apartment that is on one of the Urban Shuttle Routes in Tempe. Here is the website:City of Tempe - Tempe in Motion The "tim" at the end stands for "Tempe in Motion" . There is a major parking problem at the university and a good way to avoid the expense/hassle of driving and parking is to take some type of transit, or live within walking distance of campus. Check out the location of the apartment complex you are interested in and try to find one where you can take one of these free shuttles. It is probably better to spend a little extra money each month and live closer to the campus. HOWEVER: You do need to be careful and not wind up in an apartment complex where there is constant partying. If I were in your shoes, I would call the department where you will be doing your studies and talk to someone there. There is also a Student Housing Dept at the university. I'm sure they will be glad to give you some suggestions. Good luck!
