Sounds like a rather straightforward reference to the intersection of two streets- 23rd and McDowell. Hard to say what else it might mean without further context.

In Phoenix, there are avenues and streets. Streets run east of Central Avenue, and avenues are west of Central. You'll need to know if the intersection mentioned is for a street or avenue. I hope that helps.

Phoenix is on a grid system, so once you learn some major streets and freeways, it's pretty easy to figure out. Welcome.

The important thing to understand is east vs. west of Central. If someone said to you "Meet me at 32nd and McDowell", you would have to ask "east McDowell or west McDowell?". It could be 32nd St or 32nd Ave which are 64 blocks apart.

I once told a friend to meet me at 3rd and Washington. He was on 3rd Ave, I was on 3rd St. We could not see each other becuase we were 6 blocks apart.

These rules hold true for Phoenix, Scottsdale, Peoria and Glendale and a few other towns. The rule does not hold true for Mesa which has both east and west addresses within it's borders.

Yep - I had an interview my 2nd day in town at 24th & camelback .... being the old hand I am now I know that is the biltmore area and no one really says street when referring to that area

I was living in glendale and only knew avenues .... so I get off I-17 and am looking at street numbers and it seems like 24th should be in there somewhere - but all I was seeing was car dealerships .... so I give a call and ask for clarification, basically when she hears I'm near the car dealerships that all I need to do is go just a little bit further down the road (thinking I was by courtesy and those dealerships)

ended up being about 30 minutes late by the time I figured it out ... lesson learned and we had a decent laugh over it

one of my current coworkers is a newby and we were meeting off 7th ave ... she rode through to 7th street even though we warned her

I think it happens to all newbies, but it's very easy to figure out and once you have it the city is simple to navigate
