Hi,
We are moving from Utah to Glendale/Peoria area. I have obtained employment. I really like the arrowhead area and litchfield park. Can anyone give me some "real" info on the schools. I have a high schooler and elementary student. Are the charter schools any better?? Please help with any info you have. Probably going to rent first to make sure kids like area and schools. I am leaning towards Arrowhead area.
Thanks

Hi,

You can get reviews on schools at www.GreatSchools.net (http://www.GreatSchools.net - broken link)

Since you like the Arrowhead area... our kids loved Legend Springs Elementary, tolerated Hillcrest Middle (it's an over crowded middle school, not sure how much more to reasonably expect) and loved Mountain Ridge High School. It's been several years since we were there though, so definitely follow up with more current reviews if possible.

I don't think you need to go the charter route unless you're looking for something specific. Maybe things are more stable now, but we found some of the charter schools to be shaky at best, of course the same can probably be said about some of the public schools. Honestly I think you'll be able to find plenty of solid options in your areas of interest though.

The Great Schools website can be a good resource, but take the reviews with a grain of salt. IMO you're most likely to get folks who are "selling" the school or folks who are disgruntled for one reason or another, and often not much in between.

Good Luck with your search!

I find online reviews biased toward the negative. People who have a complaint are more likely to post on the internet about it. Use Great Schools with that in mind.

I definitely agree with you regarding apartment complex reviews...but not so much when you read food reviews and/or school reviews. Of course talking directly to several people that have experience with a particular situaion is the best.

Default Arrowhead Schools

Although I am a native, I've only been in Arrowhead since 2000. My kids have attended Copper Creek (K-6), Legend Springs (K-6), Sierra Verde (K-8), Hillcrest Middle School, and Mountain Ridge High School. As at every school, there are good teachers and bad teachers, good students and bad students. Hillcrest is probably a bit overcrowded, but my youngest 2 who attended (one still does) seem to be no worse for wear. Mountain Ridge has a reputation as a 'druggie' school; my son who graduated this year won a full ride scholarship to AZ State University, so if they apply themselves, the students can do just fine. I'll sum it up this way, 2 years ago I got a job in Tempe, and I commute 37 miles each way to and from work. I rent, so I'm not upside down in a house I can't sell. I stay in Arrowhead so my kids can continue to go to the same schools, with the same group of friends they've had for years. Now, 5 years from now, after the youngest finishes high school...
