Have a cousin who is moving with his family out to the Phoenix from the Midwest and want a "small town" type of feel while still feeling upscale. He works out of the house and doesn't need to commute. He asked me to recommend some areas for them to look at and I immediately thought Fountain Hills would be a great fit for their family.

Any opinions on Firerock? What about Eagle Mountain?

The reason I'm thinking these two areas is because they want a home somewhat secluded while still driving distance to other areas of the Valley. They value peace and tranquility along with a fairly decent sized lot.

I have friends who live there and have been there several times. I've played golf there too. I considered buying a home next to them, they had some nice lots and I considered building there. I think it's perfect for your friend. For me, Fountain Hills was too remote but it's beautiful and for people who prefer or don't mind living further away from the city (about 25-30 minutes realistically and 15-20 minutes according to City Data laws of physics), it's a great place to live.

Fountain Hills definitely has an upscale small town feel. In 2008 the population was 25,000 and it will be built out at only 30-35,000 people because much of the land is not developable and remains as beautiful desert land.

Firerock is a guard gated community with a private golf course with homes currently listed at $900k to $2.6 million. The homes are on large lots with spectacular views, especially of Red Mountain which is about 5 miles to the southeast on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community reservation. (The Pima and the Maricopa are two Native American tribes)

Eagle Mountain is the first community on the south side of Shea as you enter the Town of Fountain Hills, and directly to the west of Firerock. It's also a guard gated community. They have some smaller homes on smaller lots, and some of them still have good views.

The current list prices are from $260k to $2.3 million.

The Mayo Clinic on Shea is less than 3 miles from Eagle Mountain.

Fountain Hills has just about everything one needs. For cultural events, theaters, ball games, jazz clubs, and some upscale restaurants and shopping, Scottsdale and Phoenix are very close.

From Eagle Mountain to Old Town Scottsdale will be less than 25 minutes in normal (not commute) traffic on Shea, 101, and Indian School, driving speed limit. That is my experience.

Here is some info to pass on to your cousin:

General Plan - Town of Fountain Hills, Arizona
Fountain Hills Attractions - Things To Do and See in Fountain Hills Arizona

I love it there, and if I decide to buy a house in the hills, it will be in Fountain Hills.
