A lot of the new arrivals in town won't realize that Chandler is on a modified year round school calendar. This means that school starts for them on July 25th which is just 3 weeks from Monday. Chandler schools also get a 2 week fall break, 2 weeks at Christmas and 2 weeks for spring break.

Tempe and Kyrene Districts start on August 8th

Gilbert and Mesa Districts start on August 10th

Maybe somebody else can add what the Phoenix and West side districts do.

Good idea to gather info about other districts. I'm going to modify the thread title to encourage that a little.

In my day school always started after Labor Day.

I don't understand why so many districts make children start school in the mid-summer, July and early August, what is the reason behind that?

July and August are when lots of families like to take their summer vacations, and it's too darn hot here to even think about school so early anyway.

I'm glad my schooldays are long gone and that I didn't have to attend here.

Wow, I had no idea. So when do the kids normally get out of school for the summer?

That varies a lot more than it used to, too. It depends on whether schools are on the kind of schedule like Chandler is, (which is why they "start" in July) or on a more "normal" summer off schedule.

Litchfield Elementary School District - August 8th students return / May 24th last day of classes .... 180 student instructional days

Agua Fria Union HS District - same as LESD except only freshman start on the 8th, all others on the 9th

These school years are really no different than what I grew up with in NYS - 180 instructional days scheduled (had to schedule more than 180 actually, which was the minimum, to account for potential snow days)

Just looked at my hometown HS and they start Sept 7th and go through June 12th - then you have exams that go through the 22nd of June .... so chances are you aren't free and clear of school until then ..... looks like they put 186 days on the calendar this year, which is pretty typical

Really no difference from starting in early september and ending in late june as opposed to starting in early august and ending in late may

Most districts will be out the week before Memorial Day. Some, like Chandler will be out the week after Memorial Day.
