We have a concrete slab in the backyard and want to build a a patio cover...nothing too fancy, just a standard cover with some stuccoed pillars.

I assume a permit with the City of Phoenix is needed right? That's pretty much a given I figure.

What I'm not sure about is how close to the fence/property line can you go? Anyone know the what the building code says on this?

Yes, you do need a permit. Why not call the city directly for the most current, accurate info? Also, if you have a licensed contractor put it in for you, they are usually in charge of getting the permits, and are familiar with the codes. I'd call the city first.

If you have an HOA, you will need to get approval from them too.

For what it's worth, in Mesa a patio cover considered a small job that's eligible for "over the counter" review and approval. You still have to present two copies of plans, pay fees, and get a permit. And, yes, get thee to thy city website.

The city building department can tell you what your set back requirements are and I believe the HOA should have that information as well. Depending on the size of the patio cover, you may need to have a little engineering done as well.
