The greater Phoenix area is comprised of many large, small, and in-between sized cities ranging from 420,000 people down to 10,000. Here's some quick info and perspective on most of these cities:

Scottsdale- The 5th largest city in Arizona with around 220,000 residents. Scottsdale is an affluent area with many high-end shopping centers, fabulous resorts, and GORGEOUS golf courses. Much of the real estate is in private communities such as Grayhawk, McCormick Ranch, DC Ranch, etc. Scottsdale has been a lower-crime area which has attraced many families and older residents. Homes price are some of the most expensive in the Valley with most going between $420,000-$850,000. It varies greatly, you should generally stay away unless you can keep up on your mortgage payments.

Chandler- The 6th largest city in Arizona with nearly 200,000 year-round residents. An up-and-coming area, and known for its technological businesses. Homes price are fairly affordable with many homes being priced between $240,000-$420,000. Usually a very nice area, good for families.

Glendale- Is the 4th largest city in Arizona with 260,000 residents. This is considered a young city with the median age at about 34. Glendale is growing very fast, and is attacting many jobs. Homes prices are affordable with most homes going between $210,000-$380,000. This is a great town for younger people who love football (the new Cardinals stadium is there).

Tempe- A great area for young residents. Tempe is the 7th largest city in Arizona with around 180,000 residents. This area is constantly changing and is generally laid-back. The ASU campus is located in Tempe, so the crime rate and vehicle accident rate is higher than any other part of the Valley. Home prices in Tempe are quite affordable comapred to most of the Valley with most going from $190,000-$280,000.

This is all I could really do right now, I have to get to work. I won't do Phoenix since it's too varied, but I'll try to get Mesa up there today .
