What are some of the most common websites (other places) to search for apartments? Thanks.

apartmentguide.com isn't bad. Let's you view photos of places and shows you a rough estimate of prices for floorplans without needing to sign up. If I see a complex I like, I would look up their official website and look some more ...they are more likely to list the REAL renting prices on the official site than on these apartment hunting sites. Apartment hunting sites tend to list lower prices, actual renting price is almost always at least $100 more. Lots apartments in Phx have move in specials though.

My hands-down favorite is Hotpads.com. You don't need to sign up and there are a lot more options to search by, but the best reason for me is that you can look on a map view rather than a list view.

Hotpads and craigslist. Having private renters means you can negotiate the price and is usually cheaper than renting through a rental office or apartment company.

Just my thoughts the websites can be OK to get a lead but I would check out the apts and neighborhood before I rented anywhere.
You will also find that many complexes make comments about there own places trying to build up their own reputations via the shill method.
