I live out in Avondale and noticed that the Fazoli's and El-Paso Barbecue eateries on Litchfield Road are now closed. Never frequented those places very much and really never took notice until now.

More signs of the economic times?

Lots of chain restaurants have closed in Phoenix ever since the 70's. I remember Guggies, Helsings, Humpty Dumpty, Burger Chef, Bob's Big Boy, Howard Johnsons, Rax, Pete's Fish & Chips, Roy Roger's, and so on; I don't think bad times had much to do with it, just more competition.

Yes, there have been a lot of chain restaurant closures lately, and most are definitely related to the economy. When the economy is rough and profits are down, chains will look for their underperforming sites and close them without hesitation. Independent restaurants, on the other hand, often hold on a little longer because they might represent the blood, sweat, and tears of their owners. In other words, it's easier for a corporation to close an unprofitable site than for an individual to give up on a dream.

Unfortunately, the economy finally has started to catch up with independent restaurants. There's been a batch of closings announced in the past two weeks: Sea Saw, Regions, El Chorro Lodge, Tapino, Fine's Cellar, etc. Not all are related to the economy, but it's still a troubling sign. Many restaurants that were barely hanging on during the winter and spring may decide they just can't get through the annual summer slowdown.

Black Angus Steakhouse declared bankruptcy (not sure how many locations have closed)

Fazoli's is CLOSED FOR BUSINESS IN ARIZONA...according to several business websites.

There are a few Roy Roger's left. When did the last Pete's close? Wasn't that around 29th Ave. and Van Buren.

It's been in the local papers. El Chorro had such a pretty patio, especially at sunset. I always got the fried lobster. I'll miss Tapino too, one of my favorite restaurants.

A couple of articles on El Chorro:

Phoenix - Chow Bella - El Chorro Lodge Set to Close

El Chorro owners close doors on decades of good times

I hope Ajo Als on Camelback closes. The service there sucks but their food is great.

I jumped the gun on Pete's. They were operating back in the 50's. There were 7 of them, 3 on Van Buren, 1 on south Central, 1 on Henshaw Rd., 1 in Mesa, 1 in Tempe.
