The former Sky Harbor Expressway (state route 153) is now a mini expressway extension of 44th Street. This is mostly due to the addition of the Sky Train, which is scheduled to be completed in its first phase next year. From Washington Street down to about Sky Harbor Blvd., 44th Street seems to have been significantly narrowed ... but still an improvement from what it was previously.

The part of 44th Street from approximately Air Lane south to University still looks like the same incomplete freeway that existed when it was state route 153. My question to anybody who knows the answer is: are there any plans to improve this section? It's an eyesore, and it doesn't seem to get a whole lot of traffic. I tried searching for some answers on line, but came to a dead end (much like 44th Street dead ends at University).

This is not an expressway.

A real expressway wouldn't have 40 mile-per-hour speed limit signs and traffic lights.

It was a mistake to even consider putting a freeway in this location when the Hohokam SR 143 freeway runs parallel to it.

The best thing they did was convert this to a city street along with the forthcoming skytrain.

I think the plans are to convert this entire roadway to a city street including the part near University Drive, I just don't know when it will be done.
