My daughter who just graduated college here in Florida was offered a job in Goodyear but she wants to live downtown in Phoenix in a loft apartment. Is downtown Phoenix a good place for a young 24 year old girl? She wants to be near the night life. Will the traffic be difficult driving in and out of Phoenix to her job in Goodyear? She has mild asthma as well.

I think the downtown area of Phoenix is the best area to live. Lots of culture, cool restaurants. It host the first Friday art walk where all the art galleries come alive and open there doors to anybody. You can enjoy a glass of wine and walk down the street from gallery to gallery. Yes there is more crime, gangs, and homeless in the downtown area, but the neighborhoods can be so breathtaking, and they offer some of the must original homes in the valley. I would live in downtown in a minute if I could afford it.

It's probably a good idea. She'll be commuting in the opposite direction of the heavy traffic, and Downtown is becoming a more active and vibrant place. As for crime, Downtown itself is actually pretty safe. It's some of the areas of Phoenix between Downtown and Goodyear (e.g. Maryvale) are dodgy, but her drive on the freeway will bypass most of that.

It's a pretty long commute to Goodyear, but she will be traveling against traffic (although she'll also have the sun in her eyes both ways to work - I did that for a while and it sucked). I'm around the same age and have lived in downtown phoenix for about 7 years. I live in a "bad" neighborhood and haven't had too many problems. Downtown is a great place for young people who are seeking a decent social life with down to earth people. There's not too many overly rich, spoiled, fake people around, just artists, college students who work to pay for school and young professionals. A high rise is typically a really safe environment full of people who are active and social. Balancing lifestyle and commute, downtown phx is the best answer. She won't find anything on the West side and the East valley is too far to drive.

my sister and brother in law just bought a condo in downtown. i want to purchase sometime in the near future in the area as well. i am also 24 and trying to keep metropolitan and "hip" while also getting to work on the west side and go to school on top of that! the thing about the downtown area is that is still really sketchy in certain areas. a lot of the townhomes and condos in the area are in scummy areas that they say are "up and coming" portland place and roosevelt square is probably the best area in my opinion and then as you get closer up the biltmore area is really good too. i would definitely talk to a real estate agent, they will be able to explain to you the ups and downs a bit better. --- oh also the light rail construction, i mean downtown is kind of slow already, but the streets are under a lot of construction.

Default Are You People Crazy???

Downtown Phoenix Is Absolutely The Most Disgusting Place Ive Ever Seen. Some Of Those Nasty "shacks" Dont Even Have Floors! Some Have Dirt. If U Think Im Joking, See For Urself. Im Not Gonna Tell Anyone Not To Move Here Cuse Its Obviously Not My Decision. The Crime Rate Is Terrible. Also, Dont Be Shocked If U See Dead Dogs Lying On The Sides Of The Street, Dont Worry Its Normal, Haha No Lies Either. Good Luck With The Move.

I have no idea where you are talking about! I have lived downtown for over 10 yrs. Crime here is not bad. I run every morning and never any problems except for the ocasional homeless person. It depends on whether she is looking to buy or not. Is she is going to rent, there are lots of guest houses throughout the historic areas that are very reasonable. If she is going to buy, there are lots of exciting loft developements, but she could get alot more for her money by buying one of the smaller homes in a historic district. I commuted out to Goodyear for a temporary assignment a few years ago. I was going aganist traffic so it was a fairly easy commute. It took about 20 min. Downtown is really going to improve over the next few years so now is a good time to get in!

Default Let Me Restate

I Appologize. I Meant "around Downtown" Lets Say From Indian School Rd + South. The Crime Is Rediculus Around There. My Friend Lived In South Phoenix + Those Baseline Killings Were Right Around His House. Also Heard Gun Shots All Night + People (tweakers) Would Jump Over His Backyard Wall Randomly. I Drove Down Buckeye Road One Day + Couldnt Believe My Eyes. I Wouldnt Recommend Living Around Any Of Those Areas.

Downtown is ghetto, she would be better off living in Tempe near Mill or ASU.
