Relatively close by, particularly if you are to the west in Chandler, is the Desert Classic trail that goes through the desert on the south side of South Mountain. You can do out and backs, or do the whole trail from one end to the other, using a vehicle parked at each end. http://phoenix.gov/parks/trails/loca...ing/index.html

Yea, South Mountain will be the closest. There are a lot of trails to see there. If you're willing to go further, the San Tans aint too far away. The Superstitions are a little further as are the Sierra Estrellas. The Estrellas appear closer but most of the east side is tribal land. To hike the Estrellas google Quartz Peak.

Depends what sort of hike you're talking about. For a nature trail type thing South Mountain is your best bet, but you're just wanting to stretch your legs for exercise I'd recommend taking a look at the canal system nearest you.

I'd go to Desert Breeze Park in Chandler. You can walk all over the park, then he can play on the playground and, if it's running, ride the train.

That is a great suggestion. Walking the entire loop at Desert Breeze a few times will get your 45 minutes in, and there is lots of stuff there for the kid.

My family and I love Desert Breeze Park. You might want to drive by first, they have had the walking path fenced off for a while. They were doing some work on the little lake and fenced it all off.

Looks like the train has something special going on for the holidays, as it has in the past:

Desert Breeze Railroad: FUN IS A BREEZE at Chandler Arizona's most popular park!
