I'm a CPA candidate, and have two years financial accounting/bookkeeping experience in CPA firm. I thought it should be easier to get a job in Phoenix than in Tucson, since Phoenix is much a bigger city. But I'm wrong! I have so many interviews and even offers there, but here in Phoenix I have nothing! Maybe I should not move here.

Maybe not. Accountants never have been in great demand here.

Maybe because ASU is one of the nation's largest business schools, with nearly 10,000 students these days.

Searching for a job is hard just about all over, it's not limited to Phoenix.

The double-dip recession put a long-term damper on nationwide job growth, recovery is happening but it's a slow process.

I worked for several CPA firms as Firm Administrator within the last ten years - including after our economy went bust. I'd actually disagree somewhat with that opinion.

Public Accounting firms do hire - but usual start dates for new or recent grads are September - November. Large CPA firms will make an effort to recruit from other states - they do not want a staff of people from just ASU, U of A and NAU.

And the biggest thing they need is staff willing to travel. A lot of travel. Most firms do not have enough local business to keep everyone busy year round, but the advantages that a hub airport like Sky Harbor and a lot of flights from Southwest Airlines makes Phoenix more attractive.

In fact, several Fortune 500 firms use Phoenix as a base for their Internal Audit staff because of those factors - those folks travel about 90% of the time.

I think it's a combination of things. There is a huge demand to live in Phoenix so the job market is pretty saturated overall. Also, the population grew but Phoenix job market hasn't developed enough to satisfy that demand and population growth. It's improving but not at the rate to satisfy the growth. Quite frankly, people really should be leaving this place not the other way around. Although everyone wants to live here, there are simply not enough jobs to satisfy that demand. Of course there are exceptions depending on the industry but overall, I think this is the trend.

I was speaking from the experience my daughter had, seeking an accounting job here. She ultimately went to a headhunter agency and was able to get in that way. Applying on her own, she got nowhere.

When I came to Phoenix at the end of 2005, nurses could get a job anywhere, then (I won't say what I think happened), business started closing, more nurses than jobs, just the economy. Hopefully, with a change, things will go back to where they were. I have lived through a couple of these down trends but this is the worst by far.
