I am wondering if anybody has found some really good or extraordinary non-chain coffee places in Phoenix.

It could be anyplace in the metropolitan area, not just in Phoenix.

Coffee-caffeine-chocolate are my weaknesses and I have been craving something other than the usual Starbucks or Dunkin for my morning fix.

Out of the blue I found an out-of-the-way place in Tempe this morning called Cartel Coffee Lab, kind of a dump on the inside but they serve some really tasty lattes, better than anything at the chain places.

What are some other mom and pop coffeehouses that stand out above the rest?

Any that feature live bands or cater to an alternative-type crowd?

Coffee Rush (http://coffeerushcafe.com/home.htm - broken link)is real nice. I know they have live music at the Gilbert location, not sure about Chandler.

I liked this place. They have chess tables, book exchange and they host bands. Too heavy on the radical left-wing pamphlets and fliers for my taste but the place is still neat.

Fixx Coffee Bar On 7th
11 East 7th Street
Tempe, AZ 85281-3605
(480) 829-3420 ‎

I would also recommend:

Jobot Coffee Shop
918 N. 5th St
Phoenix, AZ 85004

Good food here as well.

Didn't know about that one.

It sounds like it's not all that far from where I live.

Fair Trade Cafe on the northwest corner of Central and Roosevelt downtown Phoenix is by far my favorite. Has courtyard and streetside seating. On the inside it is very popular for First Fridays and other art shows as the place is decorated with local artist works. (The place is only blocks from the Arts and Grand Avenue districts) They play cool mucic, the coffee is amazing and the staff is friendly, always willing to have a conversation. What I like to do is sit on the couch and use my laptop, sipping a raspberry mocha.

Coffee Co. on Central inbetween Washington and Adams at the base of the Comerica Tower is a pretty cool too. If you want that urban feeling of being in the heart of it all. Huge streetfront windows, modern design, perfect for people watching.

Both are convientantly located across the street from a light rail station.

Hillside Spot in Ahwatukee is more of a restaurant than a coffee shop, but they do serve Cartel Coffee Lab coffee and play alternative/indie music. And the food is excellent.
