Tanger Outlet malls will be opening an 85 store mall near Westgate later this year. This is a big plus for the Westgate development and the west valley as well. Tanger has a history of locating malls near casinos as well, so maybe this is a good sign that Glendale is going to drop its opposition to a casino out there too - or that Tanger is pretty confident the casino will be done in spite of Glendale.

Yeah - I received an e-mail from the Coyotes alerting me that one of the parking sections is not available as they have broken ground on the outlets and are doing the dirt work

I was excited when I heard about Westgate going up. Finally, I thought, a nice, new public space in the West Valley.

Then I saw it. Ugliest shopping center I have ever seen. What were they thinking?

I love it. Modern, clean, glitzy. One of the best places in the city - but it needs more shopping etc.

While this makes for great headlines, in actuality it means nothing. We have seen mall announcements in the past that never materialize. Case in point, Simon announced the creation of a luxury/upscale outlet mall in Chandler near Wildhorse but I wonder if that will ever actually be built? We will see

If the Phoenix Coyotes leave then Westgate is essentially going to die. And if that happens, Tanger will pull out.

I hope for Glendale and the Valley in general that the Coyotes remain, and the casino and this mall gets built. I would hate for that area to become run down. The West Side definitely deserves more shopping options

They had a groundbreaking ceremony for the mall a couple weeks ago. I seriously doubt the mall requires the Coyotes to pencil out. It's rooftops and other demographics that drive mall viability. You do have a valid point that we often see grand schemes and announcements around here that never come to fruition. Remember the world's tallest building?

yeah - this is going coyotes or not ..... infrastructure work is going and the costs are being sunk ... if it was contingent on hockey they could of delayed the things 3 months at max and had all the outcome known for hockey

All of these projects come with a price and by price I'm not referring to money necessarily. You and I have discussed this before and we both agree that when the newest/bigger and better arrives, some place else takes a hit. I can see the outlet mall being successful, but what will that do to Arrowhead Mall or plans for malls in other parts of the West Side? I can see Westgate/Outlet Mall combo forming this shopping megaplex on the West Side regardless of the Coyotes presence but if that does in fact occur, I can also see Arrowhead turning into Fiesta Mall.

I'm seeing this now with Chandler Mall and San Tan Village. A lot of stores are vacating Chandler Fashion Square and are moving to San Tan Village. Don't get me wrong, Chandler Fashion Square is an amazing mall but it's not as upscale as it was 2 years ago. In the last two years, Chandler Fashion Square has lost J-Crew, Charlotte Rouse, Harry and David, Striderite, and a lot of other upscale little boutique stores.

We all think these new developments exist in a vacuum and don't impact other developments but they do.

We've seen other projects start and then halt in their development. I wouldn't rule anything in because infrastructure work has begun. And Westgate has suffered during the past 3 years ever since the previous Coyotes owner declared bankruptcy and tried to sell the team. If the Coyotes leave and you remove 10,000 people going to games during the week, that is removing a lot of pedestrian traffic in that area and I just don't if it can surivive. But then again, the West Valley isn't like the East Valley and there aren't a plethora of malls and shopping centers everywhere so it could be successful regardless of the Coyotes.
