ANY USEFUL advice is gratiously appreciated! Thanks guys
You can miss most of the mountains and reduce risk of snow by going further south through Tx on I20 to I10. No toll roads on that route in Tx and speed limit is 85 day time once you get west of Dallas to near El Paso. Just an option for you, it is about 200 miles further this route however

I drove from Phoenix to New Jersey by way of I-40 through NM, Texas, then up through the Will Rogers turnpike in OK (I-44?), then through Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and then I-80 in PA. 30 hours even from Michigan is ambitious. Got coffee? It took me three days of all day driving. I drove a Chevy Silverado pickup. Too long ago to remember the gas, but that was when I paid $1.35 per gallon in New Jersey.

My family and I are making a similar move from south central Michigan to Bullhead City in June. Good info on the 19' Penske versus the 27'. For that long drive I would rather not white knuckle it in the mountains. We will just plan on selling more here and buying more out there. Will save this thread for routing info as it gets closer.

Oh man, more Detroiters. LOL, congrats on your upcoming escape! Sorry for being captain obvious, but what did U-Haul say?

Personally, I'd get a Penske truck, not a U-Haul. They seem to keep a much newer and nicer fleet. I moved my gf out in a 26 ft. Penske with a car trailer in September of '12, and the truck/trailer rent was around $900, plus about that much in fuel from Michigan to AZ.

I'm doing a similar drive in mid July. We're relocating from Murfreesboro, TN to El Mirage. We'll be driving a 16ft Penske, pulling my husband's car and I'll be following (or ahead) in my Prius with out 1 year old. This will be my first time driving cross country.

Good luck on your drive!

I'll be making the same move from Detroit in about a month. I'm just going to sell most of my junk and call it a day. I looked at Uhaul last week, looks like it will be over $1,000. When are you planning to move? What city are you going to?
