Ok... So, I'm looking at moving to Phoenix in just over a year & I know absolutely NOTHING about AZ except that it's basically a desert & that many people say that Phoenix is a ghetto. Truthfully, it can't be any worse than Tampa, FL. That being said, I know not all parts are a ghetto. I work for Chase & am switching departments, hence the move. I have a 6 yr old & a 12 yr old so I need areas that are good for growing families & have decent schools. I don't care if I have to rent for a while until my husband & I have enough money saved up to put a down payment on a house. At this point, any & all help & advice will be greatly appreciated.

You are right to stop yourself from using the word ghetto in the context of describing an entire very large city. Most people who throw the word "ghetto" around these days have never seen a real one-- I suspect the people you have heard use that word to describe Phoenix are in that category. I'm not sure we have a "ghetto" here at all that would compare to the real ones in cities to the east. But, that's not your main issue.

There are many areas in the Valley (metro Phoenix) that would fit the bill of what you are looking for. It would help to know where your work location will be, as commutes in this very spread out place can be long and congested, and what your budget for rent is. Will your husband be job hunting as well?

The one thing I can tell you from all of the research that I have done for our move is that the Phoenix metro area is HUGE. There is no way that anyone should be telling you that such a large area is a ghetto. And I totally agree with what OB53 said. Do lots of research and ask lots of questions. Those of us from the East Coast really don't quite get the concept of such vast space. We simply don't have it. So drop any preconceived notions and don't solicit any advice from people who haven't actually lived in Phoenix for a decent amount of time. And avoid asking those who have lived or do live in Phoenix who may also just be miserable in life. It just makes it harder to weed through the BS! I'm still trying to figure it all out myself and our relocation is coming upon us pretty quickly. We no longer have kids in school thankfully so that's one bit of research I didn't do! Good luck!

Some bad barrios mabye, but mostly a huge carefully manicured suburban like heaven, that gets hotter than hell. Welcome.

A year is a long ways off. I highly suggest taking a long weekend vacation to the Phoenix area with your husband and look around. If you already know where the office is that you'll be working in, that's even better as you will want to scout out places within a reasonable commute time to your office.

Whoever told you that a metro area with over 4 million people is 'a ghetto' is a donkey.

Desert...yes.
Ghetto? Whoever said that hasn't ever been here. Attached in a picture of there ghetto where I live; I often have to worry about wealthy retirees on pontoon boats taking out their Uzi and aiming for my windows.

The last I knew it was around 64 miles east to west. Could be more now.

SpeedyAZ, if that's ghetto then sign me up
I just got here a couple weeks ago. I've been told there is no REAL ghetto here, and if people think otherwise they should go check out some other major cities in the US.
I don't think it's ghetto, I think it looks really nice for the most part. Maybe people who say it's a ghetto should go see where I just moved from in Shreveport!

Signed up, have to live the thug life in my community.

The house across the water from me is where the King of Thugs lives, it's an awfully dangerous area I tell you...
