I agree. Public bus service and the importance of travel options besides private vehicles for seniors, was overlooked by Del Webb when creating all these Retirement Communties. Then again its been overlooked by the sunbelt states for the most part. Only now are some of them addressing it. Surprise should at least be served by the Metro Valley Bus system out of Phoenix. I think the closest buses are around the Arrowhead Mall area. If not public bus service then there should be some sort of shuttle service to nearby shopping areas in town, or points around the Retirement communities themself.

Dial-a-ride served Sun City for years until recently with the downturn of the economy and decreased ridership it folded up. Valley Metro Bus has plans for xtra service in the works. There is a Metro bus that stops on Grand Ave that can take you to downtown Phoenix and a return trip all the way up to Surprise. There are local taxis for local needs and most of the retirement homes have their own vehicles for doctor appointments, church, shopping, etal.

May be worth contacting the dial-a-ride service to confirm if Sun City is serviced. According to the website, it is:

Quote:
Outside Surprise:
Sun City, Sun City West, Youngtown, El Mirage and the medical offices near Boswell Hospital
$1.25 per person per ride
Although some comments on the site seem to indicate you can only go to the outside locations from Surprise, and not originate outside the city.

Dial-a ride is out of service. It was taken over by Discount Cab Service for Surprise and Sun City West. Dial-a ride in Sun City is not in operation anymore. Cab service is available.
