Hello,

This won't be my first time relocating to AZ from WA. I moved to North Scottsdale back in 2007 after college, however my mom was diagnosed with cancer so I moved back to WA to help her out. My girlfriend and mom will be moving down to the Phoenix area (not sure on an area yet) at the end of next month. I put our house on the market and it sold in 4 days... closing May 31st. So this came quickly.

I have been in sales for the past year and was planning on buying a house down in the PHX area however cannot get a loan due to the fact that I have not been in "sales" for 2 or more years. Therefore, I will be renting a house down in PHX. I will use my job up here, have money to secure the entire lease for a year in advance... so here are my questions, any advice is appreciated:

1.) Looking for a nice area like North Scottsdale/Desert Ridge for a cheaper price, ideas/recommendations please...

2.) Somewhere central and not too deep off the path. I plan on opening an automotive shop within the first year and working a part time job on the side for some income to cover the basics while I am starting my business. I would like to get a shop space in the Tempe/Mesa/ASU area so are there any decent places like Desert Ridge down there? Its been a while since I have visited and PHX is growing so quickly, I cannot keep up.

3.) I will be in the area visiting between May 11th-15th to secure a rental home so advice quickly would be greatly appreciated

4.) What are the best Credit Unions down there. Up in WA we have BECU (Boeing Credit Union) which is awesome with interest rates on loans, etc. Need to secure a great bank to do business with.

5.) Areas to avoid?

Thanks in advance

Mainly wanting to know what areas are newer, newer homes, newer shopping centers, etc. Rental home 3 bedroom, 2 bath, at least 2 car garage. Pool at the home or in the community. Budget $800-1100ish.

I'm pretty sure that Desert Schools Credit Union has a generally good reputation down there. They are certainly big with a lot of locations, similar to BECU. Don't know how their rates compare with other institutions, though.

There's no reason to be living in Desert Ridge/North Scottsdale ("nice area for a cheaper price" ???) if you want to be working/setting up shop in the Tempe/Mesa/ASU area. Then you say you want "somewhere central and not too deep off the path"-- I'm not sure what you mean by that in terms of location. But, you should be able to find a place IN or near Tempe-- west Mesa, northwest Chandler, etc. I'm not sure what it is about Desert Ridge that you want to duplicate elsewhere.... Tempe Marketplace is a very similar shopping/entertainment complex. Also not sure what you mean by "newer" homes. If you are paying for a whole year up front, that may be an attractive option to a landlord who might normally be wanting a bit more per month, to get you into your budget.

So_fresh, I'm curious, what is it that's drawing you back to the Phoenix area?

What I like about Desert Ridge is the "newer atmosphere", not many old buildings, etc. What I mean by "newer homes" is exactly what it says, "newer homes". Homes built more recent than if you were to go into central Phoenix, homes built more after 2005, I should have been more specific. Thanks for the advice.

The weather. I hate Washington's weather. My hobby is building cars and racing cars at the track... something I can do year round in AZ since the weather is nice. I'd rather lay out by a pool in the sun in my free time rather than have nothing to do except stay inside when its raining up here in WA

I have heard that the weather (rain) in Washington state, specifically around Seattle, is not a hard downpour, but more of a light drizzle that allows people to still move around outside. I see what you mean, though, for your interest. The valley has sunshine nearly everyday! Good luck with your move.

Last time I checked, you had to be somehow linked to local schools, by employment or having a kid in school or something.

I would second looking closer to your work locale. Chandler and Gilbert offer lots of areas with newer homes. I live in the Desert Ridge area (about 4 miles away) and my home was built in 1990. The closer you get to Desert Ridge, the more expensive the rental prices. I pay $1150/mo in rent. Commuting down SR 51 during rush hour can be a pain but I work off-hours. I wouldn't want to commute from NE Phoenix to Tempe daily if I could avoid it.
