Do they not work well? Or are they just ugly. I am not sure I love the look of them hanging on the wall......

I don't know anything about them but it does seem wasteful to cool the whole house when usually only 1-2 rooms are occupied for many hours at a time.

Both. They are ugly and take up wall space.

When I have encountered them in other countries, it was temperatures that don't come close to the summer heat in Phoenix. They were intended to be used for shorter periods of time in a limited space. In a bedroom so you could sleep at night, for examle. Better than a window a/c unit for sure -but I'll take quiet, near invisible central a/c anytime.

I've encountered them in places with severe heat. It's basically a SUV mentality v. a motorbike mentality. A good CAC will cool your closets, etc.. Splits make plain economic sense. Oh, and those ducts? How about their space? Cubic space is money. Where is the first place they would check for Legionella?
