My grandmother (God rest her soul) honestly thought we had sand dunes, camels, and Bedouins in tents.
I think her only exposure to "The Desert" before visiting was the movie "Lawrence of Arabia".
She didn't like it any better after visiting, but at least she was relieved of her misconceptions...

That sounds just like my own grandmother and great-grandmother. They visited us way back in the mid 70s.

My gramma and grampa came down here regularly in the 60s, owned 2 houses and stayed in their camper...my mom would not let me come with....When we came down to live going on 3 years, my mom talked to someone and said "Shirley if she goes down there she will never come back." ....only to visit for a short period of time

We're moving out there from PA in about 3 more weeks. I told my brother, who lives in SoCal, that by the way our mother talks you'd think we were moving to Saudi Arabia. He responded back that's probably just as hot! My old boss (I'm transferring from Philly to our Scottsdale office) commented he'd never move to AZ because of the scorpions! My two grown children, who are understandably upset that we are moving so far away, keep talking about the heat, the scorpions, the snakes, etc etc etc....We can't wait to get there!

Haven't seen any scorpions or snakes, but the heat is really, really bad. On the flip side, there are a lot of people from PA here. My friend and her family moved to Paradise Valley after she graduated from Temple.
