Yellow Jacket ! We had plenty of those in Texas. It's some kind of wasp. That's their nest. It's made out of mud. You can scrap it off just make sure it's empty. You don't want to be stung.

I always confuse wasps, hornets & yellow jackets, (unless I see the obvious yellow), but it's definitely in that family.

Spray it during the coolest time of the day. It will be difficult now, because it is warm even in the early morning. Just make sure there is no activity around the nest when you do this. And no breeze. Once you are sure there is nothing alive in there, remove it.

They should not be sprayed at dawn or dusk, (when they leave & return to their nest). The most optimal time to spray is after dark, when they are resting in their nest for the night. Also, since they react to light, (by waking up and coming out), you don't want to shine a flashlight where you're going to spray.

We must have been very lucky and crazy. We never paid attention to the time of day or anything. When we saw one of those things getting up on our house we just scrapped it off. It was always empty. The only time I got stung from a yellow jacket was when cutting a shrub. If I had seen him I would have been more careful.
