My family has been sick for weeks...coughing, nausea, headache, runny nose, low grade fever at times, very low energy. It won't go away. My little boy has severe allergies and asthma so he is really suffering. He is taking Cefdinir, Qvar, Albuterol, Nasonex, Claritin...
Since we just moved here from TX in May, I thought it was due to the haboobs and that we needed to get acclimated to all the dust in the air. I don't think it is valley fever because even though I haven't lived in AZ for years, I am from here - so I must have been exposed to it when younger. My son had his whooping cough immunizations so I don't think it is that.
Does anyone know if there is something going around in the PHX area causing an illness like this? I live in Queen Creek. Is there website that provides information about it....?

No, it's not Valley Fever - your entire family is ill, VF is not contagious, and all those symptoms are not the same as VF. Sounds as if your son has seen a doctor. What about the rest of you? What does your doctor say? And why would there be a website???

Not wanting to alarm you, but do you know the history of the house you are in? This happened to some friends of ours years ago when they bought a home/fixer and a few months later became very ill, the wife more than the rest, but had nausea, flu like symptoms, rashes. The house had been a meth house and was very toxic. Probably you just caught a bug and should consult with your doctor.

In that same vein, it ould also be a mold issue somewhere in the house.

You don't say when your son got his immunization for whooping cough. As far as I know this is contagious ? So I wonder if you all did not get infected by that immunization.

Since when is a vaccine contagious? I don't think you can catch whooping cough from someone who had a vaccine for it.

Allergies can cause all those symptoms. Our air quality is horrific during monsoon. If he's the least bit allergic to dust, he'd likely be feeling pretty miserable right now. Why is he on antibiotics? Was he diagnosed with a bacterial infection? If so, that could be the cause of the symptoms. Is he in school? If so, he could very easily pick up something there. I've heard there's a wicked virus going around, with those symptoms, that's tough to kick. Obviously if it's viral, the antibiotics won't help.

If you all have the same symptoms, it could be an air quality problem in your house. Maybe the air vents need to be cleaned? Or check for mold?

My guess is allergies and/or a virus. But I'd suggest talking to your pediatrician if your son's symptoms don't resolve in a timely manner. Hope you guys feel better soon!

I've had friends that experienced similar issues like yours and even I have experienced air quality issues when in the valley. I recommend seeing a specialist because Phoenix has the worst Year Round dangerous air particulates of any city in the USA and the symptoms you describe are that of a reaction to air quality. You asked about a website and I recommend contacting The American Lung Association and see what resources they have to help you out.

Most Polluted Cities: State of the Air 2011 - American Lung Association

You might have to end up installing high-grade and expensive air filtration systems within your home to prevent those allergic reactions and limit or eliminate outdoor exposure.

Can you provide a reputable link that states that all those symptoms, in an entire family, are indicative of a reaction to OUTSIDE air quality (and not something related to the interior of the home causing such symptoms)?

These are very likely air quality issues. Nobody here is giving a 100% diagnosis over the internet. Interior mold in Phoenix is not a prevalent issue. If this was Seattle Washington, then yes, interior mold would be a good possibility.

Nobody here knows IF the OP's home is filled with mold (not likely), but we do know for a FACT is that the Phoenix air quality is atrocious and the American Lung Association, EPA and others have verified this and have studies to back it. What we do know for a FACT is that the atrocious air quality in Phoenix can and does cause the symptoms the OP's family is having. Beyond that, it is up to the OP to get tested and find out what is causing this.
