Any views on 7050 North 27th Avenue, Phoenix please?

My wife has spotted some cheap apartments for rent, but I'm not sure the area is ideal?

Generally not "ideal", could be better, could be worse. At least they are not right along the freeway, which I thought at first. Go take a look around and see. Not a lot of good shopping really close by... Christown would be the closest.

Thanks. By the sounds of it we are better off sticking with the motel in Gilbert we originally decided on.

We can't ride by because we're in the UK right now. We arrive next month.... into the unknown

Our other current debate is whether Mesa is better or Glendale to live longterm. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

Use the motel as a base of operations to look around and get a bit of a feel for the area. Where you want to be long term you can figure out later, depending on what your work commutes and other needs in terms of what else you need to be relatively near to.

That's more or less the wrong side of I-17 to be on. During the boom, investors were flocking there and buying those apartment buildings at huge premiums. Safe in the day time, maybe not so much at night. Might even be better than the budget accommodations in Mesa.

Go a couple miles north, closer to Metro Center Mall and the area may be a little better, and moderately priced. It is mostly a working class area, with some higher level pockets in the mix.

I would live in the Metro Center area, before living in a motel anywhere. Just tour various apartments. I don't like 27th Ave at all. The street ends 2 blocks south of Metro Center, and the 7000 block is 2 miles south of there at Glendale Ave. That street as far south as it goes is rundown.

Most of the areas NORTH of the mall, and closer to 35th Ave or 43rd Ave, are better and affordable. Maybe even 35th to 43rd Ave near Dunlap Ave.

You'll be a lot happier there in your own place than in a motel, in my opinion. And Gilbert is far east and not centrally located, depending of course on your jobs.

Do you have any other choice whatsoever?

Well sure. But sometimes too much choice is a problem! We're new to Phoenix and we have to narrow down our options somehow, and do it quickly

I realised that wanting a pool could help us narrow down our choice of houses, rather than be a hindrance?

Where we stay temporarily isn't a big deal really, as long as it's safe. So from that angle Gilbert is a good bet. That'll mean a real drive to Glendale, but not so much for Tempe or Chandler. No matter where we stay there'll be good and bad to it.

Finding a house is different of course. What we're doing isn't entirely normal. People usually choose a state to live in after visiting. But we've taken a logical decision based on housing, population, climate, safety etc etc. Work wise we have plans, and income won't be so crucial simply because the cheaper housing will take some financial pressure off.

Realistically we'll have to have a good drive around Phoenix and just see which area "fits". Houses come and go off the market all the time, and I've no doubt it's tough right now. It's no secret that housing is relatively cheap in Phoenix, so there's going to be competition for the right house.

The only area we haven't considered much yet is the central area of phoenix, directly north of skyharbour airport. Technically it may be Glendale, I'm not sure. But to hedge our bets on the area, we may best located as centrally as possible. That way we can reach all surrounding areas. I mean why choose somewhere far out like Apache Junction when you could drive to Scottsdale, Arrowhead or Tempe from a central location? Just makes more sense I think.....

If you are working out in Glendale why not find an apartment or extended-stay out in Glendale or Peoria? There are plenty of safe, newer developments in the far West Valley. Gilbert might as well be in a different state. And yes, gas here in the US is only $3.50 a gallon, but it adds up.

The area directly North of Sky Harbor is not Glendale. Depending on your definition of "directly" that area near the airport might include Arcadia. Arcadia is some of the best, most established real estate in the Valley. I'd venture to say you might not be able to afford it.

You generally want to stay away from anything along I-17 between Bell Road and the Durango Curve. Look up the crime stats. The Westwood area has some of the highest calls for service of any part of Phoenix.

The area of 27th AV you're talking about has had problems with gang violence and prostitution. I've had friends who lived there and won't go back. The Catholic Cathedral is near there, and they had to start locking their doors during the day to keep hookers from turning tricks in the pews.

All sorts of good places to live in Phoenix. You just picked one of the parts that's generally to be avoided. :-)

Please, stay in a hotel for at least a week and get to know the different areas, visit them both in the daytime and at night to determine if they are good areas for you. I would never recommend to anyone to choose an area before seeing it in person, based on other people's opinions or even information found online.
