Hello everybody, please let me know if you ever had snakes in your backyard in this neighborhood. We relocated May 2011 in a beautiful home that is next to Glenwood park. This afternoon I saw a dark colored - black or dark brown or dark gray - (with yellow specs on its back) crawling from the park under our gate into our backyard. We tried to catch it and couldn't. He was too quick for us. This is the first time I see one in our yard. What is the probability of having snakes again in our yard. Please advise. Thank you.

Harmless, but you are in the desert and there is no reason to think you won't have snakes. That includes those that are harmfull.

If you have seen one you will see others.

But, that does not sound like a harmful type of snake, so do not let the above post concern you. You are not going to find poisonous snakes in Dobson Woods.

There is always the possibility of a venomous snake, especially a rattlesnake, finding it's way to any house in any neighborhood in the entire Phoenix metro area..so be careful !

This is an irresponsible statement on so many levels. A rattlesnake is not going to, and cannot, find its way to "any house in the entire Phoenix metro area" unless someone traps it and drives it there and lets it loose in the yard, which is not realistically possible. The OP's neighborhood is not out in a desert area where one might see a rattlesnake on one's property.

Please do not alarm people unnecessarily.

Indeed. A little common sense goes a long way. Dobson Woods is a long established area that's nowhere near any desert area that would be more likely to have rattlesnakes.

Why would you try to catch it, especially if it's trying to get away?
That's how most people get bitten by snakes.
