I'm not familiar with that particular company, nor am I a lawyer or HR person, but I have been a hiring manager for many years and can give you some general info. The answer probably depends on what kind of background information you're talking about. Many larger companies today contract with outside services for pre employment background checks. Criminal convictions will be found no matter how old they are unless they've been expunged. Credit info goes back 7 years. Driving histories, I think, are 3 to 5 years. Info from prior employers will probably be verified however far back they azked you to provide it for. Most larger employers, however, will only verify dates of employment and perhaps salary. Very few large companies will provide any sort of reference, good or bad, for liability reasons, and HR depts know this. A small business whose owner has never been burned by giving references may give out more info than the basics. Every company I've worked for has had a strict policy against references and only verifies employment.

fill in old time gaps with a defunct company name--not hard to come up with.

What sort of background check are you talking about? There are checks that don't involve just talking to former employers, who, as noted above by johnp292 don't generally give much information. The most they might say is whether someone is eligible for rehire, and I suspect a lot won't even say that any more.

And, following the above "advice" about putting in defunct employers won't help with the checks beyond employers, either.

Id be very careful about putting any false information on a job application or background check form. One slip amd you're toast, and lying on pre-employment forms is almost always grounds for termination at any time. Who wants to always worry about that?
