I'm looking for communities in the Phoenix area like the ones below. being next to rail lines and bus lines would be awesome but not necessary

https://www.google.com/maps?ll=44.93...337.19,,0,0.46

Well, the area around downtown Scottsdale certainly qualifies as a walkable city with plenty of nice housing, shopping, dining and entertainment. It is not on the light rail system, but has adequate bus routes to get around. Tempe will qualify as well and is on the light rail system. Downtown Phoenix is becoming more sophisticated with more and more options for entertainment and living. On a lesser scale you could consider downtown Glendale or Mesa as destinations.

The Phoenix metro is a little less urban than many other cities, but it is maturing.

Have you considered San Diego?

One way to check out places if you're not here, is to type in the address at www.walkscore.com

I find that site to be " out to lunch" unless you live in the city core much of it's scoring criteria doesn’t fit.

I can compare my two properties in Canada and Phoenix. My PHx property scores higher yet it has no public transit for 8 miles from my doorstep and other than shopping close by you need a car for everything else. In Canada I can walk around the corner and catch a 10 minute bus ride to the LRt...or I can walk to all my amenities in 20 minutes. They also assume no one would walk more than a half mile for anything.

That site has so many major flaws to it.

I've found google maps to give a better picture...without a person actually being there in person.

I found the area around Kierland Commons to be perfect, I'm actually was Tempe over the weekend checking out the area, horrible day at the airport trying to get back home. And now I'm back home and it's about 15 degrees....

Yes, I like google maps too. The walkscore site works very well for my home, though.

Yes, Kierland is very nice, kind of a mini-urban area. Plenty of dining, shopping options and great people watching. We often attend the free concerts that they host on Saturdays. Kierland is a little pricier than some other areas of the valley, but still very nice and fun.

Yes, it is going to be cool here as well, only in the 70's.

It states that transit is not factored in, in PHX. My prop that is 2 miles from the Rail gets an 80, while the one that's 3/4 of a mile only gets a 75.

actually it has a separate listing for transit...however the site misses most of the amenities in an area.

There is a beach/lake three blocks from my house in Canada as well has a 1100 hectare park with river 5 blocks away....the site doesn't mention either one of these and it lists the closes outdoor rec as 2.5 miles away which would be on the OTHER side of the river and park! that would be like forgetting Central Park in Manhattan!

The site is greatly flawed.
