wanted to add to Alex's "Those Callaways" post....yes, they came up with the "magic zip code" phrase and are very aggressive realtors....just read their gushing text in ads for their listings!!

but the reason it is called "magic", not mentioned here yet, is that 85254 is in the City Of Phoenix, but has a Scottsdale mailing address....so, for those who like that sort of thing, being able to write down that you "live" in Scottsdale is worth a few extra $$....

the 85254 area is very large and varied....some 70s/80s pink-tile subdivisions are getting a bit tired and beat-up....but there are also $1M++ areas, too....crime can happen anywhere, of course....best thing is too look for neighborhood pride, I think.....

Thanks all for the info. Our budget is up to $500k. We didn't really set out to look in that area but have found that our money goes a lot further and for the most part, the lots are much larger (huge plus for me) and we can stay close to our desired area.

Aside from my (probably petty) issues with the aesthetic of the area, have you had any issues with crime?

I'm looking in 85254 so that would be east of Tatum. Actually the neighborhoods closer to 56th St. and Bell would be a more accurate description.
I currently live a little west of there, around 40th and Greenway. I used to live a little east of there around 66th and Greenway.

The only crime issue is burglary, but that's a widespread issue for neighborhoods inside the 101. I really do love that area because of how close it is to everything. People go out walking in the evenings. There are a few decent schools & parks nearby. It takes 5 minutes for me to get to 2 different trailheads in the preserve.

Gotcha. Take a look at Arabian Views subdivision. You have 3 homes available in there in your price range. Also you have an incredible home on E Woodridge in Remmington Estates. Lastly, if you want a basement home, the one on E Aire Libre is a great home as well. Good luck.

And it's HUGE. We didn't really want a two-story and never even thought we'd have a basement here. It's a lipstick on a pig flip though with low-end finishes. It's not for me at $475K.

Oh. It looked good in the pics. Which one did you guys like the best? Just trying to get a sense of your "wants/needs"? As for the area, I checked everything 350k plus, and all of the "areas" are good, so no worries about crime/crap.

85254 is going to be more expensive simply because it has a Scottsdale address, and that's all it is, an address. The zip code is actually all in the City of Phoenix but since its mail is processed by a Scottadale post office, it gets the Scottsdale address.

No disrespect but it's not because that's "all it is". Especially if you compare it with, say, 85014, or 85032 zip codes (being random here). The crime is lesser in 85254, alas, that does NOT make it a magic zip code. Rather, people feel safer because there really is less crime, yet prices are more affordable than 85251 or 85260. So, there's some truth (however much of it may be perceived) to it being "better", thus making it more expensive.
