I'm talking basic, nothing fancy. As we are looking to buy, I see that there are some homes I like without pools, but don't want to live there and not have something to cool off in in the summer. If anyone just sort of has a ballpark figure I'd appreciate it.

right now, you can talk to someone who manages or skilled in pool works in AZ. They do great job and planning a pool is a great thing for appreciating your home. Dont worry about recession it will burn out and soon AZ will gte back on its tracks. Try Shasta Pools they offer great deals too.

$20-40K. You can spend more too. If you are sure you want a pool I would really, really try to find a house that has one. Pools do not return their cost on resale so a home with a pool with be at a substantial discount to adding one later. Also, it takes months and they make a mess of your yard and then you have a considerable landscape expense as well. Most of the low end foreclosures here are starter homes that did not come with pools and probably aren't worth adding one to over the long haul. Another alternative is to buy in a master planned community that has a pool and use that. Probably the cheapest way to get wet.

I am in the same situation as you - looking to buy and see some homes don't have pools. We decided to look it up online and for a basic pool the cost is about $16,000. Like you, we just want something that the kids can splash around in and we can stay cool.

If you have kids, and you get a pool, don't forget the pool fence. Every summer we have kiddies who drown in their backyard pools, just cause you can't be with them every second of the day. Just a thought.

You can't really "forget" a pool fence, because they're required by law, along with a myriad of other safety features. To build a pool, the contractor must pull a permit, and the pool has to be signed off by city inspectors when it is completed.

I am so worried about this! I have a four year old and a 1 1/2 year old. So scary!

It's a law? Well, i think it's a good law with all the drownings I hear about in AZ. How do people get away with not having a fence though? So many houses I look at don't have fences.

If you want a pool, keep looking until you find a house that already has one. The house we bought had a pool which cost the original owner around $40,000.

I would try really hard to buy a home w/ finished pool/ yard in this market. It seems that people who have invested in such uber-yards are unable to see their return, which is bad for them but an excellent opportunity for you to have a family fun zone. We want a pool , spa and landscaping as well when we buy.
