The famous Rito's has opened up a shop in Surprise. Probably the best burrito you can get in Phoenix. Greenway and Reems (By Nick's Diner and Church's Chicken).

That is some great news. Personally, I think the Mexican food has been below average in Arizona. I went to the original Garcia's. IMHO, B- caliber food. Good margaritas though....

Is the original Ritos the one over there by Garfield Elementary School?

Ritos is good but it's not a restaurant; it's not a really a sit down place. It's a hole in the wall that pretty much only serves good burritos but those burritos are pretty amazing. I always get the green chile burrito. What separates Ritos burritos from other places is they have a lot of flavor. Theyre not fried or greasy or overstuffed with a ton of flavorless meat that you get at most places. The filling has a great steak in a almost soupy sauce but there is so much flavor packed into one of those things that it's the best burrito you'll eat in a long time. Yeah, I can't think of a better burrito in the Valley.

I agree. The reason for this is the best Mexican restaurants in the Valley are all dives with inconvenient locations mostly located in central Phoenix so most people have never been to them. But I agree, it's not really practical for most people. I mean are you really going to drive to a bad area of Phoenix that has limited hours, little to any parking and with very few places to sit down? I really wish we had more restaurants in better areas with nicer ambiences that served the same type of food. That's what I miss about L.A. and San Antonio. They have great Mexican food but they're not limited to taco shops and obscure hole in the walls.

I understand what you are saying. THE best Mexican food for me was in an alley in Mazatlan Mexico. It was recommended by our condo's bartender (200 feet from his house). They rolled up carts every night for dinner and we sat in plastic chairs on the sidewalk. I would be rich if I could recreate that taste. Another time, I had some amazing Mexican food in a dive across the border from Brownsville TX.

That said, I have yet to find a great Arizona Mexican restaurant even as good as several MN Mexican locations. MN isn't exactly known for Mexican food. I guess I was expecting Arizona to have several great spots. Speaking of Surprise, Rivas Mexican Food off of Greenwood is some of the worst Mexican food I have ever had. I'm not sure how they stay in business.

I am looking forward to trying out Ritos.
