There was a guy with a red cart in front of Penny's. He had a little monkey that would run up and grab a coin if you held one out.

We used to shop at Smitty's Big Town on 16th street and Buckeye rd. A Walgreens was built on to the store later and you could walk from the Smittys store to the Walgreens store without going outside. At one time there was also a Post office, a Western Auto store and a El Taco, all on that same corner.

Last time I was in that Smitty's store, about 20 years ago, they had a guard at the entrance sitting on a stool with a shotgun in his lap.

Alpha Beta and ABCO were not the same company. Alpha Beta was a California chain that had stores in Arizona. When they decided to close the Arizona stores, they were purchased by ABCO foods, which used the Alpha Beta name for a while but ultimately changed to ABCO and then Desert Market.

I lived down the street from Starlight park school, and was going to school there at the time. I am still in the area and the treadaway house looks like it is starting to fall apart.

The Smitty's store at 16th and Buckeye became a Food City after Smitty's ceased to exist. The Food City store there is now closed as part of the Bashas bankruptcy deal. I work at Honeywell at the airport and I drive by that corner at least once a week on my way to Carolina's mexican food. Everything on that SW corner is closed and empty now.
