Yesterday I made a horrible mistake. I had a 15 year old mesquite tree removed from my side yard. It needed to be trimmed since it was touching both my neighbor's and my house and the company convinced me to have it removed. It was about 5 feet from my pool equipment and very close to the wall so it probably needed to come down but the yard looks terrible now, my neighbor's house is in full view and I want to replace it ASAP.

Can any local green thumbs recommend a tree that I can safely plant near my pool equipment and wall that will provide some separation between the houses? I've searched and got some conflicting answers. The Chinese Pistache seems to have a non-invasive root system that may be a fit. Anyone have any experience with them?

Thank you in advance. I'm desperate here.

I planted a chinese pistache over 10 yrs ago. Bought a small one (maybe 8ft tall) from Home Depot. Wanted to replace an old shade tree that had died. Thought it was supposed to grow relatively fast. It still doesn't provide much shade in the summer. It is about 15 ft tall now. I don't have a green thumb nor am I very good at gardening so ymmv.

Interesting, thanks for the feedback. I still wonder if its roots could damage the underground pool plumbing.

Roots grow where the water source is. So if it's wet around the pool equipment area and you have a tree there you'll more than likely get roots there.

No. You hear about old sewer pipes failing because of roots. It doesn't take a tree to do that. Clay pipes fail because they tend to leak anyway.....roots are attracted to the moisture that is released and all hell breaks loose after that.

Your old mesquite didn't cause a problem, eh?

Seriously doubt your pool is plumbed with clay pipes.

Unless your backwash/drain goes directly to the sewer?

Easy way....well hard work....but easy in thought.....dig a hole and look.

Oh. If you do have clay plumbing ANYWHERE......make a plan to replace it. Because it will fail.

PEC pipe is what the pros use now.

I realized today that I cannot replant due to the stump (ground below ground but still at least several feet deep) and I don't have enough room surrounding it. I'm on to plan B which is trying to find several 10-15' trees that I can leave in a pot, if that's even feasible. Giant pots are crazy expensive and I'm not sure where to turn. If anyone has a lead on where to get inexpensive large pots (ideally 40" plus) I'd really appreciate it. I really like this:

For large pottery pots try the place that makes them, Phoenix PreCast on Deer Valley Rd. They sell retail/wholesale and they also have a lot of slightly blemished pots at a great discount. Just remember those large concrete pots will weigh 200- 400 lbs or more. So picking them up and getting them home and placing them need some planning.
