Opened my shed door today and found this critter hanging around. It looks like a black widow to me, but I want to be sure. The tell-tale irregular webs are dotted around my yard unfortunately. I've been ill/busy recently and haven't attended to it.

This spider was quite a size actually. It had red markings underneath. Any ideas?

Looks like one to me. That small ball of fuzz next to it would be the egg sac I think. Black widow or related species I would get rid of her and the sac(s).

We have them too. A good foot stomp will take care of her. I used to catch & release but there's so damn many......

Don't want to get too close?

Raid Max. Comes in a black can.

Had them in the house when we first bought our place. It had been vacant for 3 months or so. Not surprising. Widows don't like to be disturbed, as they're among the skittish crowd of bugs.

Had to eradicate a beauty a few weeks ago. She was hangin' out behind a big potted plant and no one noticed her for quite some time. On the patio.....

Can't have poisonous arachnids where folks sit often, that's for sure. I hear their bite isn't very pleasant.

Yes and they seem to be aggressive around here...you bump the web when one is hidden up underneath something it will come shooting out to see what is in the web and they don't seem to be too afraid when they see it's a human in the web. I don't know if they would bite you in the web or not but when we first moved into our new house they were all over the place and I'd touch the web with my foot and the black widow would shoot down to my shoe which would freak me out a bit.

CISR: How to identify Brown Widow Spiders

fwiw, in a recent study on self-reported spider bites, only 4% of what people thought were spider bites were actually bites from spiders.. most of what people thought were spider bites were infections, bites from insects, etc.. not to say widows arent dangerous, just know that they dont actually bite that often..

Yep, that is one. They like my house, especially the patio. They also like the front porch and the area around the garage. I have all desert landscaping and no shrubbery up against the house, but they like it here; also the area around the utility boxes on the side of the house. They don't come inside and I don't mess with them, but twice per year I do have a bug guy come out.

She probably had some fresh eggs to guard.
