Born and raised in the Northeast and loved living in the South before moving to Arizona. Don't feel that I "escaped" anything except winter! Oh, and humidity!

How about husband who lived in Chicago until he was about 45, then moved to Phoenix to escape the cold, and now lives in NC? We've yet to be 'hassled' by any bible belters or zealots beyond a polite invitation to join them at church (which has no interest whatsover for us).

We were, however, delighted to be invited to an Indian housewarming that included beautiful sari's, excellent Indian food, music and dancing.

Frankly, the Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormon's were more of hassle when we lived in Phoenix!
