I have to say though, compared to the UK driving test, the AZ one was a ridiculously easy. And no mention was ever made of leaving a safe gap behind the vehicle in front (tail-gating).

If they don't see you doing it during the test, they are not likely to mention it. I don't expect them to drive everyone around for long enough to give them a lecture on safe driving habits and be sure that each person is going to be a safe driver under all conditions. No state does that. The written test covers a lot of that, the road test covers basics. Those who have taken drivers ed in high school here have also covered a lot of that information.

For what it's worth, my current license was issued in 2002 and in 2008 I got a letter telling me to come in and get a new picture taken.

When I moved here from Virginia many years ago, I had to take the written test. One of the aggravating things was that they told me how many that I got wrong but would not tell me which ones those were much less what the correct answers were. Seemed like it would have been a learning experience...

The drivers are sane now compared to 2006 when I first moved here (you wouldnt believe some of the stuff I would see daily from 2006-2009)

I love driving in PHX. Your drivers are fluff balls compared to Houston and Miami drivers.
