Since Phoenix is the main city, and Scottsdale is just one of many suburbs, I'd think of the area more as "Phoenix / Scottsdale" or just "Phoenix Metro Area." Sorry to nitpick, but the elevation of Scottsdale to "twin city" status with Phoenix is one of my pet peeves.

As for what to do, I think the Heard Musem is an excellent choice. It's truly a unique regional attraction with both traditional and contemporary Native American Art. For lunch, you might want to head down to the Pro's Ranch Market (broken link) at 16th St. and Roosevelt, a center of the burgeoning Hispanic culture in Phoenix. You can get a meal for a few dollars in the food court inside the supermarket or enjoy a meal at the full-service restaurant Tradiciones next-door. Since January is a month during which hiking is possible at any time of day, you might also want to hike a few miles in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve.

take a walk around main street and marshall way in old town scottsdale and visit the art galleries. if you're in phoenix on the first saturday of january take the "saturday after" art walk in downtown phoenix. this event features artist's studios. a shuttle leaves from the public library on central. or (another art activity check out the phoenix art museum on central and mcdowell.
