So I've seen some threads about how car batteries don't last too long in the heat/dryness of Phoenix. Anyone have any thoughts on how hybrid car batteries fare?

People exxagerate...greatly. Or, they buy the cheapest crap they can find and abuse the heck out of them, then act shocked when it dies after a short period.

I'm still on the factory battery in my '05 Ram....

And I just had to replace the battery (under warranty) on my '12 Fusion. not sure it is exaggeration as much as it is personal experience.

It's a hit or miss as far as batteries go in the desert

I've seen new ones off the shelf that had more then one dead cell
and I also have had an OEM one last more the four years.

The question is, just how many are you prepared to replace at one time

Well, the question with hybrids is a little bit moot, since they carry a much longer warranty than starting batteries - 8 years/100k miles.. (10yr -150k in California).. and there are now 3rd party rebuilders & recyclers selling used ones at pretty decent prices.

I was thinking the same thing. I've owned quite a few cars over the years and while I don't recall exactly how many batteries I've bought I can't think of more than a few. I drove my last car 15 years. When I bought it the battery in it was the ORIGINAL and was ten years old. Okay, it was owned by a guy in Flagstaff which may have helped, but he also commuted to Phx. four days a week. I owned the car for 15 years and replaced the battery twice. My car now is 8 years old, bought three years ago with the original battery and just replaced it last Nov.. My windshield wipers need replacing oftener than my batteries but that's because the heat ruins them.

It really is a good question, especially if someone was considering the purchase of a used hybrid like the Prius or the Camry Hybrid. If you are buying something anywhere close to that battery warranty date/mileage limit, it could end up being a more expensive used vehicle. Picking up a normal battery for a hundred bucks or so versus a multi-thousand dollar cost.

Not sure if the early demise of regular car batteries in this environment would be comparable to hybrid battery life. The answer is probably out there. If you research it further and find something, post it here.
