Relocating to the SE valley area in 08 - Gilbert is where we are looking at.
On that note I have a few questions about local healthcare.

What are the wait times like at the doctor's office?
Do most doctors accept new patients with healthcare coverage?
Are there specialists in the area or do you have to go to Phoenix for them?
What are the hospitals like? ER wait times, quality of care, etc.

Thank you.

The wait times are going to depend on the doctor. I used to go to a Dr. in Tempe and the wait times were horrible, luckily my doctor left that group and since he left and changed locations the wait times are minimal. Some doctors will accept new patients and some won't, it will depend.
Many specialist are in Gilbert you won't need to travel to Phoenix unless you want to. I have been to the new Gilbert emergency hospital on Power and Ray and I liked it very much. The wait times were a non issue with me, because they give you a nice comfortable private room with a TV and a clicker All and all I was in an out both times within 1.5 hours, I thought the quality of care was good. If you have an emergency try not to go to Banner Baywood on Power and Broadway. My husband had phemonia and after 12 hours of sitting in the emergency room he left sicker than he went in. Thank God I got our doctor to squeeze him in and actually help him. That place is a zoo between all the snow birds and illegals.

Your wait will depend on your doctor. There are a TON of new doctors and dentists in this area though so you'll have lots of choices.

The Gilbert/Chandler area has a good number of hospitals too. Like Sheena said, Gilbert Hospital on Power advertises being seen by a doc within 30 minutes. However, don't go there if you think you'll be admitted. Their rooms are horrid - they threw their inpatient rooms together quickly in order to continue receiving govt funds (it initially was just an ER with no inpatient rooms but the fed requires a certain number of inpatient rooms). Mercy Gilbert on Val Vista is a gorgeous hospital and I can never remember the name of the new one by the 60 and Higley, I think? At any rate, there are a good number though the area is growing rapidly so don't think you'll just glide right in through triage every time.

Thanks, Boatdrinks. I appreciate it. Sounds like it is here pretty much ... sometimes longer waits than others - some doctors have longer waits than others (here I find it the longer wait at physicians office is caused by those making appts not allowing added time for those needing more than a standard 10 minute visit, so they get behind by noon) ... but I was just wanting to be sure good care is available and not like some areas with high populations where everyone uses ER as their doctor (due to no medical insurance) so you are left waiting for 12 hrs to be seen when violently ill in need of emergent care quickly. Thanks again! You all have been most helpful.

It's funny what they do at Banner is they take you back and put a hospital gown on you, check your vital signs, stick an IV in your arm and wheel you back into the emergency room waiting room. Then they come and check you temp and pulse every hour.

It was actually funny when we were there(well not funny for my husband but) I watched this old man come in with chest pains and they rushed him back and about 15 minutes later they wheeled him out right next to us with his IV pole and his hospital gown and they walked away. He had one of those Jewish accents and he turned to me and said........vhat now ve vait?

I just had had to laugh I said oh yeah we are going to vait alright.

We just recently took our 19 yr. old daughter to the new "Gateway Banner" hospital Bill mentioned in an earlier reply on an "emergency basis."

They got her right in and the hospital, staff and facilities were top notch.

She stayed overnight and the care was "excellent." I don't think she wanted to come home. Room service and plasma television. I was about ready to move in myself.

Just this week she saw a specialist (Gastroenologist) as a new patient. The wait time after filling out the forms was no longer than 15 min.

Both my Neurologist and General Practitioner have never kept me waiting longer than 15-20 min. with each visit.

I realize not all medical offices are run as efficiently. This has just been my own personal experience.

I agree with the others about "Banner Baywood." Stay away from that hospital if at all possible.

We have "Humana Pro Choice" health ins. and have never had any problems with it.

Good luck and welcome to Arizona.

Just a follow up for Banner Gateway. The kids ward is fantastic. Their room is their private sanctuary. It's where they feel safe. They do not do any treatments in their room; no shots, no exams, etc. Their room is their home.

They have special treatment rooms for all the exams and shots.

It's like a big fantasy world for them and from what I understand all the kids love it there.

Bill

Thanks for the heads up Bill. I hope none of us have to go but it's good to know about Gateway. Hopefully it stays like that for many years to come and doesn't end up like the other death traps.
