My family is relocating to the Phoenix area September 1st and we are trying to figure out how to get our stuff cross country. We are selling most of our furniture and downsizing a lot.. We are driving a Ford Taurus and the weight for a trailer and belongings is only 1500 lbs. and it makes me extremely nervous to drive with it and staying at hotels, hoping it doesn't get stolen! Anyone have ideas on how to ship our stuff there cheaply? We also have a dog and a 1 year old… So rental trucks are out of the question. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Would one of those packing cube companies work for you? There are several of them, I am forgetting what any of them are called at the moment.

edit: here's just one of them: http://www.upack.com/lp/abfupackmovi...FUQC4godHysAmg

Get one of those pods you pack up and then the company ships the pod to your new location. There are several companies that do this so you can shop for the cheapest. Uhaul does it as well as a company called Pods. There are many others.

I have gotten price quotes from Upack and Uhaul and its about $2,000 to have stuff shipped out there.. Im always on the hunt for the cheapest bargains and I feel like theres got to be something cheaper.. It was about $490-$700 to rent a trailer (depending on the size we go with) and $50 a month for storage. Which is what we are aiming to save for. But $2000 seems a bit much to me. Any other thrifty ways to save??

The problem I'd be more concerned about is towing a trailer across the country with a Ford Taurus as that vehicle is not designed to tow. You could find yourself broke down on the side of the freeway and then have much more to worry about than $2000.

LBTRS, that is a really good point.. Does anyone know if you go in on it with someone, like combining your stuff- if that is a cheaper option? I have relatives that have done that in the past and had a really good experience.

Excellent! Good luck! You will have a much nicer trip with no trailer worries and just your family in the car. We look forward to hearing more from you.
