Just an update and a thank you to those who answered my original question re: building costs... About a month ago, I posed a question regarding estimated building costs for new construction. After touring the area we want to live in, we pretty much concluded we won't be building a new home but will buy an existing home.

We were in Phoenix metro last week and looked at several houses and some land and determined that we will be able to find what we are looking for in our price range without building. We are limiting our search to very North Scottsdale, Carefree and Cave Creek, but I'll bet we end up in Cave Creek. Since we have the luxury of time we can wait for just the right thing (we are semi-retiring in 4-5 years but hope to purchase in the next 6-18 months). Though we saw a couple of houses that would have been very nice, I'm waiting for the one that knocks me off my feet. Mostly waiting for that view that will take my breath away!

While in Phoenix for less than a week we managed to pack in a great deal even with our day of house hunting. We went to Surprise for a t-ball game, to Goodyear, Tempe Art Festival, horseback riding in Cave Creek, Rodeo Days parade in Cave Creek, hiked the Hieroglyphic Trail in Gold Canyon (highly recommended) and made a day trip to Prescott. There is never a shortage of things to enjoy. I know it's hot in the summer (I spent four weeks there one year from late June to late July several years ago) but I hope you all realize how lucky you are to live there!

Thanks again for responding to my original query.
