It has been called a floating jellyfish, an iconic piece of art and a waste of taxpayer money. But with a majority of the Phoenix City Council's endorsement Tuesday, the proposed piece of public art for a downtown park is now being called a sure thing.
In a 5-3 vote, the council gave preliminary approval for a contract to engineer, fabricate and install the art.
It will be suspended about 55 feet above the Civic Space park, which will be built north of Van Buren Street between Central and First avenues.

It looks to me like a giant bladder. If they affixed some sort of fountain to it, this could become a nice "incontinence awareness" tribute.

regardless of how it looks I'd feel much better about it if I knew it would last longer than 15 years. What's the point in purchasing a "sculpture" that doesn't last very long?

I believe only the netting or something like that lasts 15-25 years, the rest of course should last much longer. I guess it needs to be maintained.

Two million dollars of TAXPAYER money is a waste for something like this. If this aerial sculpture is supposed to be so magnificent, why can't it be paid for with private capital, such as corporate sponsors ... or better yet, the artist herself? Furthermore, the article stated there's not a guarantee that this will hold up in Phoenix's climate. If anything, a public park in a hot desert city should have more shade.
