You can buy hair products on Amazon, that's not a problem. Here is why I would caution against the move. Your family is correct! Arizona is one of the last places (dead last is New Mexico) to move to with your heart condition. If you absolutely have to move there, contact the Mayo Clinic first. Also high altitudes may be an issue as well, depending on the city.

Good luck. FYI: I lived and did my clinical rotations (respiratory) in the Southwest. The area is not big on dealing with transplants, so finding a specialist may be difficult. AZ has maybe two, Nevada and New Mexico have zero. I immediately moved to the East Coast once I passed all of my boards....needed to be where the "action" is in health care.

California and Texas are the best in that region for your heart and your hair.

Why is Phoenix more detrimental to heart health and what is your source? The valley altitude is around 1300 feet, not that much higher than Ohio.

According to this AZ is 31 and cold weather increases your risk of heart attack or stroke.

I didn't speak specifically about Phoenix, but the state as a whole that's why I said "depending on the city". Also, the issue isn't heart attacks or strokes, but post heart transplant care. Being at higher altitudes has risks as well as living in a state with a poor history of caring for transplant patients. Factor in that the OP is a Black person (donor organs are more successful when the candidate and donor are of the same race/ethnicity) I was looking at the big picture. Live where the chance of getting a heart transplant is increased and in a state with many heart hospitals, in case another surgery may be needed.

You can find out more through the Scientific Registry and even see result by state.

SRTR -- Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients

Arizona's data is here:

http://srtr.org/csr/current/Centers/...1XX201406P.pdf

I mentioned that I am a respiratory therapist for a reason. I am the one that maintains the ventilator and I work with organ donation frequently. It's not like the movies, It's rare for organs, especially hearts to flown from all over the country....you need to be close to a donation.

Where is the most action in the Southwest? Texas and California.

I don't think she's considering the higher elevation cities (Flagstaff, Phoenix), but they also don't have transplant centers, so they wouldn't be good choices for both reasons. Neither Phoenix nor Tucson (the cities with transplant centers) have elevation issues, but the OP should definitely consider the information you posted about the transplant issues, which do impact those two places.

One of my best friends had a heart transplant at Mayo about six years ago. She lives...and has always lived...in Payson, 5,000 ft. level. She does fine and the altitude is no problem for her. She also spends time in Flagstaff and up on the Rim with no problems.

It shouldn't be too hard to find a heart specialist at Mayo since they have a very good dept. for that there and have done a lot of them.
